Among the activities of the
National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys is a
lobby day in Washington D.C.
I was privileged to attend last February.
Along with several other Michigan NACBA members, I visited
the offices of Senators Stabenow and Levin, and
Congresspersons Kilpatrick, Dingell, Conyers, and Wahlberg.
Senator Stabenow and Congressman Wahlberg met with us
personally.
We emphasized the onerous, pointless paperwork
requirements, which impede our clients from getting needed
relief, and serve no purpose.
Such as, the credit counseling you must complete before you
can file a case.
By the time you contact me, the odds are it is way too late
for credit counseling to make any difference.
A bankruptcy attorney friend, who accompanied me on the
trip, compares it to telling people in the hospital
emergency room, that they must go home to complete a form
about why it would be a good idea for them to have
insurance, return in 24 hours, and then they can be treated
at the hospital.
